“I’m too tired at the moment…"
“OK. I’ll watch TV for only 5 more minutes…"
“You expect me to go back to work now? My boyfriend only just dumped me!"
Or simply, “I’m just not feeling like it now."
You and I have been through all of that, haven’t we? Those very real excuses reasons we always gave ourselves and others for not working.
The key, as always, is to start. That’s the tough part. After starting, as you and I both know, it becomes half as difficult to continue. Or perhaps even easy to continue. You actually forget that you were after all finding it very difficult to work!
So on with my little tips…
- Start with the best : No matter how much you think you loathe your work, there must be some parts of it that you like. Or at least don’t dislike all that much. These are the best points to start with. Just tell yourself, “I’ll do what I like most, and nothing else." Once you start doing it, I promise you won’t feel all that bad doing it, and like I earlier said, you’d soon forget that you didn’t want to start working at all!
- 5 minutes strategy : This is my favorite. If you’re a regular reader of mine I’m sure you know what this principle is all about. That’s what’s amazing about it-it works in about 95% of situations in life. And it’s a surefire success…Coming directly to the point (finally!), the “5 minutes strategy" is a way of tricking yourself into doing what you should do, but don’t want to do. Tell yourself, “OK. I don’t want to study (workout/cook/start working on that report…). So I won’t do it for a long time. Let me do it only for the next five minutes." After you’ve done whatever you’re supposed to do for five minutes, you’ll find yourself continuing to do it. In all probability you’d have forgotten about the five minutes thing by that time and are ‘into’ working. In case you’re not and are still not feeling like continuing, just tell yourself to do it for another five minutes. An hour-difficult. But five minutes is peanuts, right? It’s almost 100% certain that after the 2 nd five minute cycle you’ll get ‘in the flow’ and will be able to continue to work on. Try this technique and see the results for yourself!
- Start with routine work : OK, so you’re not feeling like working. This might mean that you won’t be able to concentrate fully in your work at the moment. So start with something that doesn’t require so much concentration. You must have something which is easy and routine, may be uninteresting and boring? Start with that. Doesn’t make sense? Read on…The best thing about doing this type of work is that you can do it while listening to music/catching up on your favorite soap etc. So if you’re using this technique, make sure have something enjoyable on, preferably music, and have a ball while you see your work getting done!
